Zwitsal Apeldoorn
Speciaal
Transformation strategy for the former factory complex into a multifunctional new city district.

The Zwitsal factory site is part of the Apeldoorn Canal Zone and has the potential to become a fully-fledged part of the city through renewed use and transformation of its buildings. It was examined how the transformation of the different buildings can be an engine for sustainable, high-quality development in combination with the preservation of the cultural heritage.  A phase plan was drawn for the municipality of Apeldoorn. The possibilities for development of the site were investigated based on existing qualities. The individual buildings were switched on in different phases or development steps. The first phase concerned the maintenance of the buildings and identified the necessary renovations. It was then examined how the buildings could be individually adapted to make new use possible. After this a future image was sketched of what the influence of further development of the site would be, and what the impact of this would be on the overall coherence of the industrial ensemble.
